On Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 18:00 - 21:00 in Room 107 of the Central Building of the University of Piraeus (Karaoli & Dimitriou 80, Piraeus), we invite you to the speech of Dr. Georgiou Kakavas, Director of the Numismatic Museum, in the context of the course "Management and Administration of Cultural Units and Organizations" of the Direction "Digital Culture" in the PMS "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies", of the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus.
 

Speech Topic: "The inseparable relationship between Culture, Art, Education and the Museum. The case of the Numismatic Museum”


The case of the Numismatic Museum constitutes a special page in the biographical history of public archaeological Museums. The Ilio Melathron, by the architect Ernestos Ziller, home of the Numismatic Museum, and once the residence of Herrikus Schliemann, has earned a coveted place in the history of architecture and art worldwide. Within the 2,000 sq.m. of the Museum, hosts the World History of Currency, with more than 15,000 exhibits from its 600,000 artifacts. The Museum is one of the richest of its kind internationally and a very special Institution. The speech will present the actions devised, planned, organized and presented by the working groups of the Museum, and which demonstrate that when the museum dares to escape from the role of the only expert and authority, then it becomes a center of meeting, creation, fruitful dialogue, pillar of education, education and art.

 

Brief Biography

Dr. Georgios Kakavas studied History and Archeology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens, from where he graduated with honors. He also holds a degree with "excellence" from the Theological School of the same University. As a scholarship holder of the S. Sharipoulos scholarship, he obtained a Master of Art in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. He was declared a doctor of the same university with the supervising professor the eminent Byzantine scholar Prof. Robin Cormack and on the subject of the life and work of Dionysios of Fournas, author of the eponymous "Interpretation of Painting Art".
He was admitted after examinations to the Archaeological Service of the Ministry of Culture and has worked as a curator in the 11th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, the 2nd Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the 1st Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, as the head of the 24th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities based in Lamia and responsibility for the prefectures of Fthiotida, Evrytania and Fokida and as Deputy Director of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. He was a researcher at the Christian and Archaeological Society under the supervision of the Byzantine scholar Academician Manolis Hatzidakis, as well as a special post-graduate scholar at the Department of Byzantine Archeology of the University of Athens under the supervision of the Byzantine scholar Academician Panagiotis L. Vokotopoulos. Since 2012 he holds the position of Director at the Numismatic Museum of Athens. He has participated in the organization and execution of many exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He is a regular guest speaker at conferences, speeches, lectures at Greek and foreign institutions and bodies. He is also responsible for the organization and coordination of educational programs of the YPPO.
