Anniversary Video for the 80th Anniversary of UNESCO

The production of the anniversary video marking 80 years since the founding of UNESCO, presented at the event held on 12 December 2025 in Thessaloniki, was carried out by the MSc “Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT & Advanced Digital Technologies” and the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion".

Collaboration between the MSc and ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival

The first workshop took place at the Blue Lab of the Municipality of Piraeus, under the theme: “The Lion of Piraeus – Port Transiting”

1st Workshop – The Lion of Piraeus

On 9–10 November 2019, the educational workshop Animation Lab by ANIMASYROS was held as part of the academic activities of the MSc Programme of the Department of Informatics at the University of Piraeus.

The workshop was implemented by ANIMASYROS in collaboration with the Piraeus Port Authority and the Blue Lab of the Municipality of Piraeus. It had an experiential and hands-on character, focusing on the connection between digital culture, creative industries, and contemporary audiovisual production technologies.

Students worked in teams, combining creative conception, storytelling, visual design, and animation techniques to produce original digital work.

Workshop trainer: Ms. Ioanna Giakoumatou, animation and audiovisual education specialist.

Animated Athens: Echoes of Themistokleous Street

Athens, June 2025

As part of the 2025 European Heritage Days (26–28 September 2025), under the theme:

“Architectural Heritage – Bridging the Past with the Future”

The workshop “Animated Athens: Echoes of Themistokleous Street” is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture services and ANIMASYROS, with the participation of MSc students.

The workshop focuses on the architecture and stories of historic Themistokleous Street in Exarchia, Athens — from Trifyllio Mansion and Exarchia Theatre to Vox Cinema and Exarchia Square.

The project bridges past and present through creativity, imagination, and digital technologies.

 

 
 

Students Create

Documentary: “From Sound… Wood”

Produced as part of a Master’s thesis, this documentary highlights the construction of the Cretan lyra through the testimony of a musician and instrument maker, documenting the role of digital technology in preserving intangible cultural heritage.
 
 
“Maniatika Dark”

A digital cultural project by MSc students highlighting the history of the Maniatika district through an audiovisual spot incorporating animation and archival material.

The project was presented to the Mayor of Piraeus, Giannis Moralis, within the framework of further collaboration with the Municipality.

The MSc at the Hellenic Parliament

 
On 20 June 2024, at the Special Permanent Committee on Regions of the Hellenic Parliament, the UNESCO Chair “Creative Cities in Motion” and the MSc Programme were invited to present their work.
The session theme was:
“The UNESCO Chair ‘Creative Cities in Motion’: Creative, Smart, Sustainable Cities and Regions.”
 
 
On Tuesday, 26 November 2019, the Director of the MSc Programme “Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT & Advanced Technologies,” Dimitrios Vergados, was invited to the Special Permanent Committee on Regions of the Hellenic Parliament, together with the Mayor of Trikala, Dimitris Papastergiou.

The session was held under the theme:
“Smart Cities: The Integration of New Technologies into the Urban Environment and the Challenge for Local Government.”
 
 
 
Innovation Competitions
 
The MSc student team “Smart Face Mask Detector” won 3rd Prize at the Innovation Competition of the Municipality of Piraeus.
 
The "Smart Face Mask Detector" team, consisting of students from the MSc in "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" within the specializations of "Smart Cities and Advanced Digital Technologies" and "Internet of Things and Advanced Digital Technologies," won 3rd Prize in the Municipality of Piraeus Innovation Competition.

Visit to INTRASOFT International (14 May 2019)

In the context of its extroversion strategy and connection with the labor market, the MSc Program "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" conducted an educational visit to the INTRASOFT International facilities in Paiania on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, as part of the INTRASOFT International Business Day.

The initiative was organized with the aim of providing students with direct contact with the modern business and technological environment, offering a comprehensive overview of professional career paths in the field of Information and Communication Technologies.

Visit to American School of Classical Studies at Athens

We had the great honor of visiting the premises of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA). We were welcomed by the Executive Director of the ASCSA, Mr. Pantelis Panos, a collaborator of the MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies," whom we thank very much for this unique invitation.

 

 

Visit to Smart Trikala – Municipality of Trikala

A visit of collaboration, substance, and education was conducted by staff and students of the MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" of the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus to the Municipality of Trikala on Thursday, June 27, 2019.

The Mayor, Mr. Dimitris Papastergiou, welcomed them, speaking about the essence of the Municipality's actions in the field of modern cities and the benefits for citizens, at both pilot and implemented levels. This was followed by a briefing on the Municipality of Trikala (history, culture, society, actions, innovation, policy axes) by the Municipality's special advisor, Mr. Thanasis Michalakis. Subsequently, on more specific technological issues, Mr. G. Chrysomallos, electrical engineer and IT applications executive, elaborated on all the actions and programs implemented by the Municipality of Trikala: "Smart Trikala" with all its programs (pilot and otherwise), the "20000" citizen service line, technological leadership issues regarding Smart Farming, collaborations with leading companies in the sector, technical matters, problems, and solutions provided in Trikala, and much more.

Furthermore, the MSc focuses on three different areas: Digital Culture, Smart Cities, and IoT & Advanced Digital Technologies. Each of these finds application in Trikala, such as the Digital Asclepeion, the Digital Home of Trikala Creators (both under development), the ActiveAge program, and the actions of the AVINT, ELVITEN, and Cities4People programs regarding mobility and urban life, among others.

The visit was informative, educational, and substantial, as university knowledge and the direct application of innovative actions are areas where collaboration can be further developed. Moreover, the Municipality of Trikala prioritizes cooperation, adopting solutions and proposals implemented or suggested by numerous Greek and European bodies through the realization of dozens of programs.

 

 

Visit to the OTE Group Telecommunications Museum

With great pleasure, the group of postgraduate students from the MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" and the research team of the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion" visited the OTE Group Telecommunications Museum on October 9, 2024.

This visit is a continuation of previous visits by the MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" and represents a significant step in our effort to explore and develop collaborations between the UNESCO Chair ("Creative Cities in Motion") and leading organizations in the field of Digital Technologies and Telecommunications.

 

Visit to the Music School of Sparta on Friday, 07/02/2020

A visit to the Music School of Sparta took place on Friday, February 7, 2020, at 12:00 PM. Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados, Director of the Laboratory and the MSc Program "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" of the University of Piraeus, visited to thank the students and teachers of the school for their participation in the Conferment Ceremony of His Eminence the Metropolitan of Monemvasia and Sparta, Mr. Eustathios, as an Honorary Doctor of the University of Piraeus.

Following a proposal by Prof. D.D. Vergados, His Eminence the Metropolitan of Monemvasia and Sparta, Mr. Eustathios, was proclaimed an Honorary Doctor of the University of Piraeus on November 22, 2019, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). This was made possible by the kind donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), in the presence of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos, Metropolitans, representatives of the SNF, officials, professors, and a large audience.

In the context of the visit to the Music School of Sparta, Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados delivered a lecture titled: "Digital Culture and Smart Cities in the Modern Digital Era."

The MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT & Advanced Digital Technologies" at Researcher's Night 2025!

On Friday, September 26, at Researcher's Night 2025—the great European celebration of science and research—held at the Zografou Campus of the National Technical University of Athens (Central Square), the MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT & Advanced Technologies," along with our team of collaborators, engaged with people of all ages: students, teachers, families, and young researchers who discussed the applications of our work with us.

Warm thanks to our scientific collaborators who supported our participation with their presence and expertise.

Together, we presented the work of the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion" and the MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT & Advanced Digital Technologies." We shared the vision of the Chair Holder, Professor Dimitrios Vergados, and our ideas for more creative cities. We highlighted how research meets society, the latest developments in Smart Cities, the magic of IoT and Digital Culture, the applications of Artificial Intelligence and the Green Transition, and research that contributes to growth and Sustainability!
 
 
 

 

Participation of the MSc in Researcher's Night 2018 – NTUA

The Postgraduate Program (MSc) "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" participated in the European Researchers' Night, held on September 28, 2018, at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

Researcher's Night is the largest European celebration of science and research, organized annually in more than 300 cities with the aim of connecting the scientific community with the general public. In Athens, the event was hosted at the historic Averof Building of the NTUA, featuring the participation of research groups, universities, and entities from the Research and Innovation ecosystem.

The MSc participated in activities for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, contributing to the presentation of modern research approaches that link technology, innovation, and cultural heritage. This participation is part of the Program's extroversion strategy, enhancing the public visibility of research and the connection of university knowledge with society.

The MSc "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" of the University of Piraeus actively participated in Researcher's Night 2018 at the Averof Building of the Historic Patission Complex of the NTUA on Friday, September 28, 2018, which was concluded with great success.

The Vice Rector of Finance, Planning, and Development of the University of Piraeus, Professor Markos Koutras, visited the MSc stand.

Within the framework of Researcher's Night, applications developed as part of the "Digital Culture" Master’s were presented to visitors, allowing them to interact with the projects (http://www.cs.unipi.gr/dcsciot).

Το Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών «Ψηφιακός Πολιτισμός, Έξυπνες Πόλεις, IoT και Προηγμένες Ψηφιακές Τεχνολογίες» του Τμήματος Πληροφορικής του Πανεπιστημίου Πειραιώς συμμετείχε στο Spoudase Festival, το οποίο πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 22 και 23 Ιουνίου 2019 στο INNOVATHENS.

The Postgraduate Program (MSc) "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies" of the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus participated in the Spoudase Festival, held on June 22 and 23, 2019, at INNOVATHENS.

In the context of the Festival, on Sunday, June 23, 2019 (18:00-18:45), a workshop titled "5G, IoT & Smart Cities: A New Digital Era" took place, featuring academics and executives from the Telecommunications and Information Technology sectors.

The keynote speaker was Dimitrios D. Vergados, Professor and Director of the MSc Program, and Director of the Laboratory of Digital Culture, Smart Cities, Internet of Things (IoT), and Advanced Digital Technologies and Services at the University of Piraeus.

The participation of the MSc in the Spoudase Festival is part of a broader strategy of extroversion and connecting academic knowledge with society, education, and modern technological developments in the fields of 5G, Smart Cities, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Specifically, leading speakers from the IT and Telecommunications sectors analyzed everything regarding 5G and Smart Cities.
