Participation of Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados as a Keynote Speaker at the Informational Event: "Green and Digital Transition in Western Attica. The utility of implementing digital twins in industrial and artisanal activities."
Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados, holder of the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion" and Director of the "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT, and Advanced Digital Technologies & Services" Laboratory at the University of Piraeus, participated as a Keynote Speaker at the Informational Event: "Green and Digital Transition in Western Attica. The utility of implementing digital twins in industrial and artisanal activities," which was organized on June 30, 2023, by the Union of Businesses and Industries of Western Attica.
In his speech, the Professor discussed the main objectives of the Green and Digital Transition, focusing on sustainability, the economy, the environment, and society.
Drawing inspiration from the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion: Urban Sustainable Mobility & Utilization of Cultural Resources," and its contribution to knowledge enhancement and research promotion regarding "smart" cities and settlements, sustainable urban mobility, and peri-urban environments, he referred to the United Nations' Agenda 17 Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the particular importance of Goals 9 and 11, relating to industry, innovation, and infrastructure, in the broader context of sustainable cities.
He also highlighted the necessary transition of factories into Smart Factories through the use of smart and sustainable operational methods, necessitating advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, digital twins, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and the concurrent utilization of Industrial IoT (IIoT).
A significant part of his speech focused on Digital Twins and their significance and benefits, presenting applications of digital twins in industrial activities, as well as in the fuel industry.
After the speech, a commemorative plaque was awarded to the Professor for his valuable contribution to the development of advanced digital technologies and systems in our country.
Professor Dimitrios Vergados was introduced by Mr. Elias Moustairas, President of the Union of Businesses and Industries of Western Attica.
Brief interventions were also made by Mr. Evangelos Liakos, Member of the Hellenic Parliament (New Democracy, Western Attica), Mr. Petros Kokkalis, Member of the European Parliament (SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance), and Mr. Nikos A. Papandreou, Member of the European Parliament (PASOK-Movement for Change), while the discussion was moderated by journalist Anastasios Atzampos.
