Speech by Dr. Georgiou Maggini, Member of the Three-Member Executive Committee of the Benaki Museum, at the University of Piraeus

On Friday, June 22, 2018, from 18:00 - 21:00, in the Conference Hall of the Central Building of the University of Piraeus (Karaoli & Dimitriou 80, Piraeus), we invite you to the lecture of Dr. Georgiou Maggini, Member of the Three-Member Executive Committee of the Benaki Museum, on the topic "Digital strategies for museums, from vision to everyday life", which will take place in the context of the "Digital Culture" direction, of the Advanced Informatics Systems MSc Program, of the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus.

The changes in the way museum organizations operate and communicate during the last three decades have been stormy. The digital revolution in the research field, the widespread use of the internet and social media have transformed not only the 'how' but also the 'why' of museums, expanding their audience and at the same time raising key questions regarding their mission.

Georgios Magginis is a doctor of archeology and art history and a member of the executive committee of the Benaki Museum. He has taught history of Byzantine, Islamic and Chinese art at the Universities of London (SOAS, Courtauld Institute) and Edinburgh. He has participated in archaeological excavations in Greece, Cyprus and Egypt and has worked in the Hellenic Children's Museum, in the re-exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, as well as as a museum development consultant in the United Kingdom. He has published scholarly articles and two books: Mount Sinai: A History of Travelers and Pilgrims (2016) and China Rediscovered: The Benaki Museum Collection of Chinese Ceramics (2016).
