Start of the UNESCO Chair in the Laboratory of Digital Culture, Smart Cities, Internet of Things (IoT) and Advanced Digital Technologies and Services" - An important distinction of international scope

It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we announce the official opening of the UNESCO Chair "Creative Citiesin Motion: Urban Sustainable Mobility and Utilization of Cultural Resources" in the Digital Culture, Smart Cities, Internet of Things (IoT) and Advanced Digital Technologies and Services" workshop by 01/01/2023.

The UNESCO chair was awarded in October 2022 to the "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, Internet of Things (IoT)" laboratory of the University of Piraeus, which is directly connected to the Master's Program (MSc) "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT" and Advanced Digital Technologies", chaired by Professor at the University of Piraeus and Director of the Laboratory Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados.

This is a highly symbolic and important distinction as it highlights the quality of our Laboratory's research work and strengthens the extroversion of both the Laboratory and the University of Piraeus as a whole, upgrading their position on the global academic map.

In addition, the UNESCO Chair is to be a center of activities in the fields of research and innovation, while the close cooperation with UNESCO, the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, other UNESCO Chairs, and other national and international bodies for relevant programs and activities will contribute to the creation of a scientific center of excellence and innovation.

The purpose of said UNESCO University Chair is to contribute educationally and consultatively, to the promotion of the development of sustainable urban creative cities, through the use of new technologies and services, innovative and climate-neutral ecosystems, to the strengthening of the creative industry and advanced digital skills, to the promotion the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage, the peri-urban environment and the revitalization of the city's cultural life, as well as the protection of the cultural landscape and raising public awareness of smart/digital sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities and settlements, sustainable urban mobility.

For its smooth operation, the planning and implementation of actions, a network of collaborators will be created that will consist of postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well as members of the academic community who will join forces to achieve the maximum possible result.
