On Monday, December 5, 2022, the guest of the PMS "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT & Advanced Technologies" of the University of Piraeus was Mr. Mathew Baldwin, Deputy Director General in the Directorate General for Energy (DG ENER), in the European Commission.

Mr. Mathew Baldwin, in his lecture, analyzed the implementation plan of the REPowerEU project, which includes a series of measures to rapidly reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels and accelerate the green transition, while increasing the resilience of the energy system to EU level. Also discussed were issues of energy management and efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy sources (RES) and digital technologies. Furthermore, he developed the importance of the Mission of 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030.

Mr. Mathew Baldwin was introduced by the Professor and Director of the PMS, Mr. Dimitrios D. Vergados and the Teacher, Ms. Konstantina Sioutri, while he attended the discussion online. at the invitation of PMS, Mr. Chryssis Nikolaidis, Member of the EU Mission Board for the Mission "100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities, from and to citizens by 2030". Matthew Baldwin was appointed Deputy Director-General at DG ENER, the European Commission's energy department, on 1 June 2022. There he is responsible for the Energy Platform Task Force which aims to end the EU's dependence on Russian gas as soon as possible. He served in the European Commission for more than 20 years. He was previously Deputy Director-General at DG MOVE for 6 years, where he led the Commission's Horizon Europe Mission for 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030, and also served as the EU coordinator for road safety and sustainable urban mobility. He was previously Director for Aviation at DG MOVE and Director of Market Access at DG Trade. He is also Assistant Professor at LUISS Guido Carli University, Rome, Italy. He served in President Barroso's Cabinet from 2007-9 as Advisor on Energy, Climate Change, Trade and Development. He was Deputy Chef de Cabinet to Commissioner Lamy from 1999-2004 and Chef de Cabinet to Commissioner Hill from 2014-16. His main professional interests are energy, transport, trade negotiations and climate change. He is of Italian and British nationality and has two grown sons. He is passionate about cities and their potential to lead on climate change and is a keen but increasingly slow cyclist.
