Speech by Mr. Grigoris Grigorakakis, Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefallinia of the YPPOA, on the topic "Geoinformatics Tools: At the heart of research methods in archaeology".

On Wednesday, June 13, 2018, from 18:00 - 21:00, in room 338, of the Central Building of the University of Piraeus (Karaoli & Dimitriou 80, Piraeus), we invite you to the lecture by Mr. Grigoris Grigorakakis, Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefalonia of the YPPOA, on the topic "Geoinformatics Tools: At the heart of research methods in archaeology" which will take place in the context of the "Digital Culture" direction, of the PMS "Advanced Informatics Systems", of the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus.

In this lecture, the use of Geographical Information Systems in Archaeological Science will be presented, which is not a matter of recent years. The beginnings can be traced back to the first post-war decades, in the appearance and development of computers. Already in the 1960s, a structured discourse regarding the "use of computers for archaeology" was being articulated, and the leaping development of natural science methods and the new theoretical approaches to issues of space in the context of the science of Geography deeply influenced archaeological theory and act. Now there is talk of "Computational Archaeology" or "Archaeo-informatics", which is analyzed in the introduction of methods based on the use of computers for the analysis of archaeological data. With reference to the area of Kynouria, on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese, the importance of Geographical Information Analysis Information Systems is demonstrated in relation not only to the interpretation of archaeological data, but the very method of approaching the problem. Through the geographical reference of the archaeological information and its correlation with other levels of geographical information, the spatial dimension of the archaeological data is highlighted. And each time the meaning of space (landscape) by man, the spatial footprint of human action, is located, registered, systematized and approached interpretatively through tools of spatial and spatial statistical analysis, on the basis of a model of reality that allows the overall approach of archaeological data in a medium and long-term perspective.

Grigoris Grigorakakis is an archaeologist of the YPPOA with grade A'. Honors graduate of the Department of History and Archeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, holder of a Master's Degree in Classical Archeology from the same department, honors graduate of the National School of Public Administration specializes in the application of Geoinformatics methods in archaeological science. He has conducted rescue excavations in the region of Arcadia, directs the Archaeological Program of South Kynouria and was the manager of the Project "Re-exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Tegea" and especially of the innovative sub-project of creating and implementing its digital applications, the core of the Museum's award (EMEA 2016).
